A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
